Funds will benefit Art Aids Art, a US based non-profit organization that has worked extensively on education and economic development projects in South Africa.  Construction of eKhaya eKasi is the culmination of five years of collaboration with the families of Monkeybiz Bead Project, many of whom have been impacted by HIV/AIDS. The center will provide education in literacy and nutrition, health and HIV/AIDS counseling, while serving as a source of income-generation through an art boutique, eatery and hair salon.  A bed & breakfast on the second floor will host artists-in-residence and tourists interested in socially-conscious cultural travel.  The center was designed by a team of students from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.

BOOK RELEASE: Also featured will be the release of a new art book, Bead by Bead, featuring the story of Monkeybiz, one of the great success stories of democratic South Africa. A  collective of 450 women from the impoverished townships surrounding Cape Town, Monkeybiz has created a sensation at exhibits worldwide through their unique reinterpretation of traditional beading styles, selling out at renowned venues that include Sotheby’s of London.

DOCUMENTARY SCREENING: Filmed primarily in Cape Town and surrounding townships, the documentary Bigger than Barbie follows the experiences of women from Monkeybiz Bead Project as they work to overcome extreme poverty and HIV/AIDS through contemporary bead art.  The film includes appearances from Monkeybiz enthusiasts designer Donna Karan, singer Annie Lennox, and Nobel Peace Prize Winners Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
